Doctor Gerard Furlong graduated with honours from St Bartholomew’s College Hospital in 1992 and went on to pursue a career as an anaesthetist working in several large hospitals in and around the UK.

The role of the anaesthetist is an essential part of delivering a high quality of health care to patients.  Ged Furlong while working as an anaesthetist was responsible for a wide range of duties for the patients that he cared for.  These included pre-op evaluation of patients, consulting with the surgical team performing the operation, creating an individual anaesthesia program for each patient and post-op care and management of patients.

As anaesthetists are perioperative physicians it gives them the opportunity to work in a number of disciplines within the field of medicine.  During his career the anaesthetist Gerard Furlong has worked in the fields of obstetrics, in the ICU (intensive care unit) at Coventry and Warwick hospital and also at the Trauma elective ward in Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland.  Over the course of his career Doctor Furlong came to enjoy his work in the obstetrics ward the most after realising that he had a special talent for administering epidurals to ladies at the business end of pregnancy.

Ged Furlong has been a keen student all of his life and is a member of several societies.  Membership of these societies allows him to stay abreast of the latest developments and advancements in field of anaesthesia as well as contribute articles to their journals.  His specialist knowledge has been used in several research projects most notably on the HL7 CDA implementation guide for SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia).

Outside the world of medicine Ged has a number of interests including travel, sailing and rugby but due to illness he prefers to sit back and watch it on the telly.
